Known as the “water net,” Hydrodictyon forms mesmerizing, mesh-like colonies with a hidden complexity. Inside its geometric “polyhedron stage,” spores form and multiply asexually — a silent bloom of microscopic life. But Nathanael Pringsheim saw more. Through his pioneering work, he uncovered that Hydrodictyon also reproduces sexually, revealing a crucial evolutionary link between green algae and land plants. This artwork is rooted in Pringsheim’s original observations — a tribute to the intricate life of one of nature’s oldest architects.
