Discover the hidden beauty of algae piece by piece. This puzzle features Chondrus crispus, the red alga commonly known as Irish moss, in an ornamental interpretation by Ernst Haeckel.

The real Chondrus crispus grows along North Atlantic coasts and is cultivated as a source of carrageenan, a plant-based gelling agent widely used in foods and cosmetics.

Haeckel’s illustration, however, takes artistic liberties. Instead of the alga’s naturally thick, lobed form, he created an elegant, radially symmetrical structure resembling a flower — reflecting his fascination with the connection between nature, science, and aesthetics.

The motif is adapted from Haeckel’s celebrated Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature).
